Even as it plunges further into irrelevancy and beclowning, for some reason Newsweek printed this fine article by David Mamet -- probably just so it could troll for snark in the comments. (The comments seem to be uniformly idiotic) But Mamet's right. President Obama just signed a law that gives his family armed guards for life. You, on the other hand, citizen, need to turn in any weapons you have because guns are icky.

The Chicago Tribune printed a correction to a graphic that was probably longer than the original article. But it was about assault weapons, and guns are icky, so it's almost impossible to say anything too bad about them, right? Other than the fact that the story is wrong, it's accurate!

New Geography's Joel Kotkin looks at the rise of the new power class. In Obamaworld, companies such as Apple and Google thrive --traditional manufacturing/extraction businesses are to be cast into the outer darkness.
The Koch Bros. earning their money through oil extraction industries, is old and evil; Apple is new and good (everybody in Occupy has an iPhone or Macbook) -- it does not matter that their hardware is frequently built by overworked, underpaid Third Worlders in dangerous conditions. As Kathy Shaidle says, "It's different when we do it!"
Kotkin identified government and the academy as "the new clerisy," who determine what is good and bad and what will be supported, and what will not. Despite his rhetoric, President Obama really hates the middle-American flyovers and their "bitter clinging" values -- one of the reasons why they're pushing for gun control, Obamacare-related attacks on religion, etc., anyone who doesn't follow the bien pensant values.\:
More disturbing still may be the clerisy’s regal disregard for democratic give and take. Both traditional hierarchies, or new ones like the Bolsheviks after the 1917 revolution, disdain popular will as intrinsically lacking in scientific judgment and societal wisdom. Some leading figures in the clerisy, such as former Obama budget advisor Peter Orszag, openly argue for shifting power from naturally contentious elected bodies to credentialed “experts” operating in places Washington, Brussels or the United Nations.
Such experts, of course, see little need for give and take with their intellectual inferiors, in Congress or elsewhere. This attitude is expressed in the administration’s increasing use of executive orders to promote policy goals such as better gun control, reduced greenhouse emissions or reform of immigration. Whatever one’s views on these issues, that they are increasingly settled outside Congress represents a troublesome notion.
